Nashville and Memphis travel tips

Off to both next month, and I’m sure some of the well travelled citizens of WHO must have previously visited. My itinerary is pretty flexible and I’m covering the big things. Google etc is ok, but any tips from first hand experience on decent bars for drinking and live music, decent places to eat would be greatly appreciated!

Having just driven for 28 hours straight from Texas to the Northeast and end to end through Tn, Pilot is also a good petrol stop.

We always use 'Love's' if theres one.

You have had good suggestions so far so won't repeat any of them.
In Nashville add Tootsies Bar, Jack's Barbecue, Country Music Hall Of Fame and the Ryman Auditorium and the bar next to the Willie Nelson Museum.
Away from the centre (and Opry area) try East Nashville. Less commercial but does have hipsters.
In Memphis go to Gus's for chicken, Blues City Café for barbecue / ribs, Rum Boogie Café for music and the Rock and Soul Museum.
If on a wider driving tour add Muscle Shoals Alabama and Clarksdale Mississippi if you want the history of soul and blues.
If you are planning a road trip for a few weeks I can give you more suggestions eg Pigeon Forge for Dollywood and access to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Natchez Mississippi for historic buildings etc.

Scorch, Memphis was dead when I was there as it was just after the weekend and just before thanksgiving. Beale Street is the place with all the bars. Got BB Kings and The King Jerry Lawlers place as well which was closed when I was there. Definitely go to Graceland and the Sun Studio tour. We also did the Stax museum as well.
Nashville was absolutely buzzing when I was there. Loads of bars, and people milling about. Roberts, as I put on here, was recommended to us by a local. Did the Johnny Cash museum which was good and the ducks at the Peabody as OTB mentioned. Are the Titans at home when you’re there? If not Vanderbilt might be playing although it was freezing when I saw them and no booze either as a college game.

Thanks for the replies! Will have a proper look later, but looks like some really good suggestions.
OTB- plan to get a fix of country music if i can!

If you go to Nashville go to Bobbies dairy dip ice cream parlour, on the opposite corner is Hattie B's fried chicken and on the other corner is the diabetic center!
The US summed up in corners!*
Mempis is a drug ridden crime hole, driven through there a few times but stopped off at the hotel where MLK was shot.

If you are on a roadtrip, worth stopping off to see Elvis's birth place, but if you are just in Memphis, not really worth the travelling, as it is very small and doesn't take long to go around.
Also about an hour and half from Nashville is the Jack Daniels distillery, again worth seeing if you are going that way!
There is also a Steamboat dinner and show that goes from the Grand Ole Opry along the river to Nashville and back which was a good night. All country music though!

Nashville is quality, the main strip will keep you busy for a few nights. Quality live music all along it, great people too.
I drove Nascars round a track when I was there. If you fancy something similar, take a spare pair of strides to change into afterwards.

I should have said more about the Bluebird - it's magical. It's SO small, and you're SO close to the performers - it's incredible. You've got to be right on it to get tickets (with friends, colleagues etc), but the effort is worth it.

Went to both six months ago. Only spent one night in Memphis but thought that Nashville was many thousand times better. Poles apart. Nashville was just lovely and friendly, Memphis was fine, but.... edgier. And not as nice.
Will you be embracing country music properly? Go to the Bluebird, go to the Opry, go to every bar along Broadway. I am no fan of America at all (it's all fake and full of Americans), but I loved Nashville. I thought I would as I love country music, but it was so much better than I expected.
Not an Elvis fan but I enjoyed Graceland. Other than that we wandered around Memphis eating and drinking (can highly recommend Rendezvous - the best ribs I've had in my life. Saw the ducks at the Peabody - get there early if you want a decent view. Did the RCA Studio B and Country Music Hall of Fame tours in Nashville. And we did a hop-on hop-off bus thing, which crashed into a street sign. Loved the Grand Ole Opry at the Opry House, although beer was eye-wateringly expensive.
